ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY

I was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, but have lived in many different places over the past 75 (!) years. In grammar school and high school I was the “class artist”, but my “official” art training began at age 13, when I took a weekly evening class in drawing and oil painting from a local artist. I have been drawing and painting intermittently since then, but other endeavors intervened for much of that time, as listed below.

EDUCATION, ETC:

~ Bachelor of Architecture (5 year program) from the University of Michigan, 1961. Intermittent Grad School courses in Math and
Science, 1961 to 1963.

~ US Army, 1963-66, stationed in France in the Corps of Engineers.

~ Architectural draftsman at a small firm in Hartford, CT, 1966-70

~ M.D., University of Connecticut, 1974

~ US Army (again), 1973 (fourth year of Med School) until retirement as an Army Physician, 1992. Over the years I was stationed in Germany, Tennessee, and California. .

~ Physician at Group Health Cooperative in Silverdale, WA, 1992 until partial retirement in 2004, and full retirement in 2007.

~ Since 2007 I have worked (actually it’s not work at all--it’s fun) full time as an artist, and have recently added acrylic painting to my repertoire.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My painting style may be described as “contemporary realism”. I try to imbue each painting or drawing with a spark of life and mystery. I do this through the use of unusual perspective, or by the use of dramatic light, shadow and color, and by trying to provide a feeling of harmony in each painting or drawing. There are many thoughts about the meaning of the word “harmony” in art, but I believe it is best described as the melding of unity (which is expressed by a repetition or a dominance of color, shape, line, value, etc) and variety. Most artists, including myself, will spend a lifetime attempting to master this concept of “harmony” in order to produce art that is meaningful and universal.
