Path Through The Woods

Paula Gill was born in California and moved with her family to Oregon and then St. Louis, Missouri, where she graduated from high school. She received a scholarship to study for a year at Walthamstow Hall, a girls' boarding school in England, where she was introduced to oil painting and European art history. Her schooling continued at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she earned her BA in Studio Arts with a focus on printmaking.

Working as a graphic designer during the day, she continued her art education at art schools and community colleges in the San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle, furthering her skills in drawing, ceramics, printmaking, and watercolor. In 1998 she moved from the world of corporate graphic design to self-employed artist, creating and selling artisan tiles under the name of Red Step Studio.

In 2004 Paula was awarded a commission from the Kitsap County Arts Board for a large multi-tile composition for their 1% for the Arts program. "Rudebeckia" can be seen in the Norm Dicks Government Center in Downtown Bremerton.

Artist Statement

After making marks on paper for more than 20 years, I rediscovered the joys of using clay as an art medium. Since 1998 my focus has been on ceramic tile making. I enjoy creating new expressions in clay by pulling together the various techniques and skills from my work in printmaking, watercolor and graphic design.

Using a slab roller and woodblock carving tools, I create one of a kind tiles carved in low relief on terra cotta and stoneware clays. The 3/8" thick low fire tiles have an aesthetic similar to that of woodblock prints; the bold simple graphics show playful images inspired by gardens, birds and modern life. Please visit for a year-round schedule of garden shows and art festivals.

I currently show my watercolors, woodblock prints, oil pastels and tiles at Collective Visions Gallery.
