Artist's Statement

For the last 20 years, woodcarving has been my primary means of artistic expression. In 1999, I began walking the trails at Theler Wetlands in Belfair, Washington. I found the landscapes very inspiring. I knew I had to find a way to express what I was seeing and feeling. I tried experimenting with several mediums, but I wasn't happy with the results. Then, I discovered pastels. I began drawing with pastels 3 years ago. It felt very natural using this medium to paint the wetlands landscape. I like to use lots of layers of color. I soon found my style to be a combination of Impressionism and Realism, or as I call it, "blur and detail". I find the lighting to be a key element in my work. The sunsets are incredible. Sometimes the reflections become my focal point, or even a burst of light through a dark cloudy sky. There's so much to see and possibilities to explore. The pastels encourage me to be fluid and bold - although many of my paintings end up with a serene, contemplative quality in the end.

I love the freedom of expression it gives me, and the hands on approach. After carving for so many years, I truly enjoy the flexibility and quickness of the pastels. I continue to be inspired walking the same trails for the landscape never stays the same. It is constantly changing as the tide comes and goes, the time of day, cloudy or sunny, and most noticeably the seasonal changes. I still have a lot of drawings to do with wetlands as my theme. This series is called Theler Wetland Series.
